At-home food and beverage consumption trends remain strong over the last month, according to an analysis of Nielsen data by Goldman Sachs Equity Research released earlier this week.
Overall non-alcoholic beverage sales accelerated over a two week period ended on May 16, increasing 7.4% year-over-year, compared to 5.8% for the four week period.
CSD volumes continued to grow; up 10.7% over the 12 week period,13.8% for the last four weeks and 14.5% over the last two. Pricing has remained relatively stable, increasing 2.5% over the four weeks and 2.3% over the two weeks. Category sales have grown 16.6% over the four weeks and 17.2% over the two weeks.
Amidst the soda category’s major players, Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) has been growing the fastest, with volume up 18.2% over the four-week period against a price increase of 3%. Sales during that time were up 21.7%, increasingly slightly to 21.9% over the last two weeks. Coke (17.5%) and Pepsi (13.9%) also reported growth.
Amongst the major brands, PepsiCo reported a 8.6% increase in overall sales during the last four weeks (up 11.4% over the last 12 weeks), while Coke saw total company sales rise 11.1% over the same period (10.1% for the last 12 weeks). KDP grew overall sales 18.7% over the four weeks.
Led by Red Bull, the energy category reversed declining sales over the two week period, growing 3%. Volume was up 9.2% over the period, partially offset by a price decline of 5.7%. Red Bull supplied the bulk of category growth, with sales rising 6.9% over the four week period and volume up 7.1%. While still up 66.4% over the last 52 weeks, Bang Energy continued to see sales deceleration, down 17.3% over the 12 week period, 19.4% over the last four weeks and 17.2% over the last two weeks. After falling nearly a point over the four weeks, Monster saw sales rebound 1.6% over the two weeks.
In other categories, ready-to-drink coffee reported an increase in sales (11.1% over the last four-weeks, 12.5% over the last two weeks) and in volume (14.1% over the last four weeks), against a 0.9% fall in pricing. Within that segment, Califia Farms reported sales (22.5%) and volume (30.9%) increases against a 8% drop in pricing.
Sparkling flavored water continued to grow sales (22.7%) and volume (18.8%) over the last four weeks, with big gains in sales and volume for Coca-Cola, Spindrift, Polar and PepsiCo. Average pricing rose 3.2% for the category across the four week period.
Bottled water was one of the only beverage categories to experience significant declines in sales and volume, according to the data provided. Over the two week period, volume fell 7.6% and sales dropped 9.5%, an improvement over the four week period, which saw volume decrease by 10.2% and sales by 12.5%.
