Non-alcoholic beverage sales continue to slow down, but remain positive with a 3.7% increase over the two-week period ending July 17, 2021 on a year-over-year basis, according to an analysis of Nielsen data by Goldman Sachs Equity Research. Volumes continue to shift back towards the on-premise channel during this period which is inclusive of the July 4th holiday while sales climbed 16.4% on a two-year stack basis (last year’s report of the same period began July 5).
How Did The Major Players Perform?
PepsiCo’s total sales rose ever so slightly over the two week period – up 1.9% versus a 2% increase over the four-week period and 4.6% over the 12-week period. However, the company’s volumes decreased 2.5% during the two-week period while average prices rose 4.4% over the same period. On a two-year stack basis, PepsiCo’s sales grew 12.9% year-over-year during the two-week period.
Total sales for The Coca Cola Company “moderately accelerated” over the two week period, according to the report. Coca Cola reported a sales increase of 3.2% despite volumes dropping 2% over the same period. On a two-year stack basis Coke’s dollar sales grew 15.4% year-over-year during the two weeks and 13.2% for the four-week period.
Keurig Dr. Pepper (KDP) reported its total company sales continued to decelerate, barely remaining positive at a 0.5% increase over the two week period. KDP’s total dollar sales were up 17.7% on a two-year stack basis during the period.
What About Energy?
Growth across the energy category remains elevated with sales jumping 10.3% year-over-year for the two-week period. Monster Energy Drink sales rose 12.6% during that period, 6.4% over a four-week period and 8.4% for the 12-week period. Red Bull continues to lead the category with sales increasing 33.7% on a two-year stack basis during the two-week period compared to Monster’s 13.7% growth over the same period. Red Bull’s sales grew 12.6% year-over-year during the two weeks.
Among the other major energy players, Bang Energy is pushing onward with 3.8% sales increase during the two weeks, 5.2% for the four-week period and 5.6% at 12 weeks. Sales for Rockstar and MNT DEW Rise mark the continued deceleration of Pepsi’s energy drink portfolio with a decline of 7.6% over the two week period and falling 12.2% during the same period on a two-year stack basis.
Growth Across Other Non-Alcoholic Beverage Categories
CSDs (excluding energy): Total sales accelerated across the category, up 3.8% during the two-weeks, 2.6% during the four-weeks and 1.9% over the 12-week period. On a two-year stack basis total sales for CSDs rose 18.8% during the two-week period. Pepsi’s CSD portfolio led the category’s growth with a 6.1% sales increase over the period. KDP reported CSD sales grew 4.8% while Coca-Cola saw a 2.8% increase over the period. On a two-year stack basis, KDP continues to lead with 25.6% growth versus Coca-Cola’s 18.2% jump and Pepsi’s 17.1% increase.
Bottled Water: The category continues to grow steadily, posting a 4.1% increase in sales over the two-weeks (6.4% over the four-week period and 14.9% for the 12-weeks). On a two-year stack basis category sales went up 8.3%. Danone led the category’s growth with a 22.8% increase in sales over the two-weeks.
RTD Tea: Growth of the RTD Tea category continues to head downward with sales dropping 3.8% over the two weeks, decreasing 2.6% for four-weeks, but increasing 1.5% over the 12-week period. Looking at the category from a two-year stack basis, the category is trending upward with sales climbing 4.4% over the two weeks and remaining positive over the four and 12-week periods.
Sparkling Flavored Water: Category dollar sales are on an upward trend for the sparkling water category, reporting a 3.4% increase in sales over the two weeks. Talking Rain continues to lead the category posting 5.6% sales growth over the two-week period. On a two-year stack basis, the category continues to see positive momentum with sales accelerating 25.8% over the two-weeks.
RTD Coffee: Total dollar sales across the RTD Coffee market are picking up with 14.4% growth over the two weeks. Category sales grew 33.6% y/y on a two-year stack basis. Coca-Cola and Danone lead the category with sales increasing 44.6% and 24.5%, respectively.
Still Flavored Water: Category sales grew 3% over the two week period and rose 18.5% on a two-year stack basis during the period.
