NielsenIQ: Non-Alc Beverage Sales Decelerate in August

Non-alcoholic beverage sales felt some deceleration in the two-week period ending August 24, according to the latest analysis of NielsenIQ data by Goldman Sachs Equity Research.

  • Total dollar sales fell -0.2% in the two-week period, compared to +0.6% in the four-week period and +2.3% in the 12-week period.
  • Volume growth declined -2.7% in the two-week period, versus -1.3% for the four-week period and +1% in the 12-week period.
  • Average pricing increased by +2.6%, accelerating from +1.9% in the four-week period and +1.3% in the 12-week period.

CSDs

Carbonated soft drinks sales were even across the two- and four-week periods, up +4.4%. Volume sales fell by -1% (worsening from -0.8% in the four-week period) while average pricing rose +5.5% (+5.3% for four-weeks).

The Coca-Cola Company’s dollar sales were up +3.6% (+4.5% for four-weeks) as volume declines hastened at -3.8% (-2% for four-weeks) and pricing rose +7.7% (+6.6%). PepsiCo reported dollar sales up by +1.6% (+0.5% for four-weeks) with a -1.7% volume slide (improving from -3.6) and +3.3% average pricing (+4.3%). Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) was up +4.7% (even with the four-weeks) as volumes grew +1.1% (+1.4%) and pricing rose +3.6% (+3.3%).

Among better-for-you sodas, stevia-sweetened Zevia reported sales down by -6.5% in the two-weeks (-5.9%) as volume dropped -10.2% (-8.8%) and pricing increased +4.1% (+3.2%). Meanwhile, Poppi posted sales growth of 139.8% (+146.5%) with volume up +155.9% (+158.1%) and average pricing down -6.3% (-6.7%).

Energy Drinks

Energy drinks sales fell -0.7% in the two week-period (-1% in the four-week period). Volume sales were down -0.3% (even with the four-week period) and average pricing dipped -0.4% (-0.7%).

Dollar sales for category leader Monster Energy, excluding Bang, fell -3.2% (-3.4%) with volume decline of -4.2% (-4.3%) and average pricing up by +1% (+0.9%). Red Bull grew sales +3.4% (+2.5%) with volume down -0.8% (-2%) and pricing up by +4.3% (+4.6%).

Celsius sales growth slowed to +4.6% (+5.9%), with a -19.2% pricing drop (-18.5%) offsetting +29.6% volume improvement (+30%). Its exclusive distribution partner PepsiCo (Rockstar and MTN Dew) has continued to face double-digit declines with dollar sales down -23.8% in the two- and four-week periods, while volume was down by -23.1% (-22.6%) and average pricing dropped -0.9% (-1.6%).

Emerging performance energy brands Nutrabolt/C4 (+8%), Alani Nu (+62.8%) and GHOST (+6.2%) grew dollar sales in the two-week period. PRIME (-67.3%), Starbucks (-93.2%) and A Shoc (-88.2% to just $6.5 million in U.S. retail revenue in the trailing 52-weeks) faced sharp double-digit sales slides in the two-week period.

Bottled Water

Water fell -4% in the two-week period, with declines worsening from -1.8% in the four-week period. Volume sales dipped -3.2% (-0.9%) and average pricing was down -0.8% (-0.9%).

Private label products, which lead the category, fell -2.2% in the two-week period (+0.8%) as volume sales were down -2.1% (+1.1%) and average pricing came down -0.1% (-0.2%). BlueTriton Brands sales growth was down slightly at -0.1% (+1%) with volume slipping -0.2% (+0.2%) and average pricing up a mere +0.1% (+0.8%).

Nearly all of the tracked brands in the data set reported dollar sales down in the two-week period: Coca-Cola (-8.7%), PepsiCo (-6.4%), Fiji (-14.2%), Nestlé Holdings (-8.7%), CG Roxane (-7%), KDP (-18.2%), Niagara Bottling (-3.4%) Hint (-12.5%) and Liquid Death (-17.8%) all declined. Danone North America (+2.2%) was the only tracked brand to post positive dollar sales growth in the two-week period.

Sports Drinks

Sports drink dollar sales fell -8.3% in the two-week period, versus -5.1% in the four-week period. Volume sales were down -10% (-7.7%) while an average pricing increase of +1.9% (+2.8%) did little to offset the decline.

Gatorade (PepsiCo) dropped -9.8% in the two-week period (-5.8% in the four-week period), with -13.3% volume sales decline (-10.1%) and +4.1% average pricing growth (+4.7%). Coca-Cola’s portfolio of BodyArmor and Powerade fell -3.6% (-2.5%) as volume dropped by -4.9% (only slightly improved from -5% in the four-weeks) and average pricing rose +1.3% (+2.7%).

Sales of PRIME have again worsened, this time down -39.2% in the two-weeks (-37.5%) as volumes sales were down -29.8% (-28%) and average pricing was reduced -13.4% (-13.2%).

Electrolit sales rose +13.3% (+17%) with +12.2% volume sales growth (+14.8%) and +1.1% average pricing improvement (+1.9%).

Sparkling Water

Sparkling water sales decelerated slightly, up +4.7% in the two-weeks (+4.8% for four-weeks) with volume growing +1.2% (+1.3%) and pricing increased by +3.4% (+3.5%).

Category leader Talking Rain (-1.7%) and LaCroix producer National Beverage Corp (-6.8%) saw sales slip in the two-week period, while private label sales were up +4.2%.

The Coca-Cola Company (+24.2%), PepsiCo (+5.4%), Spindrift (+13.8%), Waterloo (+15.9%) and Liquid Death (+10.7%) all reported positive dollar sales growth in the period, while KDP-aligned Polar was down -5.5% and Nestlé Holdings fell -3.1%.

RTD Coffee

Ready-to-drink coffee sales accelerated while remaining down -3.9% in the two-week period, improving from -4.3% in the four-week period. Volume sales were down -4.7% (-4.5%) and average pricing was up +0.8% (+0.2%).

Starbucks sales were down -7.6% in the two-weeks (-8.6%) as volume sales fell -10.4% (-11.4%) and average pricing was up +3% (+3.2%).

Danone’s STOK grew dollar sales by +7.2% in the two-week period (+8.2%) and Black Rifle Coffee Company was up +1.1% (-0.7%).

Califia Farms (-6.2%), Coca-Cola (-7.8%), and Super Coffee maker Kitu Life (-33.6%) faced dollar sales declines in the two-week period.

Coconut Water

Coconut water bucked the trend by maintaining double-digit 13.3% dollar sales growth in the two-week period, but still decelerated from +13.8% for the four-week period. Volume sales rose +20% (+20.4%) and average pricing fell -5.6% (-5.4%).

Category leader Vita Coco was up +4.7% (+7% for four-weeks) and Danone-owned Harmless Harvest grew dollar sales +15.8% (+14.7%).

Goya (+17.3%), private label products (+10.4%), C2O (+22.2%), Sun Hing Foods (+8.7%) and Brooklyn Bottling Group (+40.1%) all reported positive dollar sales growth in the two-week period.
