BENEO’S All-Natural Fiber Ingredients Make it Possible to “Snack to Stay on Track”

New Healthy Snack Ideas to Debut at SupplySide West 2012; Booth #24108

August 23, 2012 – Morris Plains, NJ – BENEO Inc., one of the leading manufacturers of functional food ingredients, supports food and beverage companies to develop snacks providing consumers with the benefits of a fiber-rich diet.  BENEO will offer a selection of snacks samples at its booth (Booth #24108, at the SupplySide West Expo in Las Vegas, November 5-9) to demonstrate that nutritionally profound snacks are a valuable contribution to a balanced diet and help to achieve the necessary amount of fiber.  As such, BENEO makes it possible to snack to stay on track.

“There is no doubt that raw vegetables and fruit contribute to our daily fiber intake. However, considering our everyday diet, it is unrealistic to expect consumers will eat enough whole grain cereals, fruits and other fiber-rich foods to reach the recommended levels of fiber intake and benefit from its full effect. That is why BENEO is supporting the development of fiber-enriched products,” explains Joseph O’Neill, President BENEO Inc.

BENEO’s natural and prebiotic fiber ingredients support recommended fiber consumption, digestive health and weight management via nutritionally profound snacks enjoyed throughout the day or whenever consumers want to snack; and that’s a winning formula for every snacks manufacturer. The presented product samples will illustrate how the prebiotic fiber inulin and oligofructose can improve the nutritional and technical characteristics of snacks. In addition, there will be healthy snacks made with the company’s naturally derived sweeteners and texturizers. These samples, based on new formulations and recipes, prove that functional ingredients support healthy solutions for snacks while the taste, texture and appearance stays the same as the “traditional snack.”

FIBER CONSUMPTION STILL LACKING

Although consumer awareness about the need for fiber is on the rise, it’s still no surprise that Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, which is why the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified dietary fiber as a “nutrient of concern.”

Recommended fiber intake, according to the report, is 25 grams of dietary fiber a day for women and 38 grams each day for men (based on 14 grams per 1,000 calories). The average intake in the United States is only 15 grams a day, roughly half of what’s recommended.

Naturally derived from chicory root, BENEO’s inulin and oligofructose have been widely used in the food industry over the past two decades, driven by the link between diet and overall health. Belonging to the best researched prebiotics, their health benefits have been proven in several scientific studies worldwide.
