Just in time for National Tequila Day, Sneaky Spirits Co-Founder & CEO Rachel Kiley announced today the official launch of Pedro Furtivo Tequila. With a mission to preserve the sacred relationship between the Agavero (grower) and the Tequilero (producer), Pedro Furtivo co-owners Omar Martinez and Peter Kiley (Sneaky Spirits Co-Founder & Monday Night Brewing Brewmaster) have created a premium quality, additive-free tequila produced exclusively from 100% fully matured agave azul piñas grown on Martinez’ third-generation family land in Mexico.
Born in the small town of Ixtlahuacán del Rio, Jalisco, and raised in Atlanta, Ga., Pedro Furtivo Tequila adheres to the geographical restrictions and specific production criteria set by the Tequila Regulatory Council, allowing it to be considered a truly authentic tequila.
“We feel honored to have the opportunity to create a tequila using the time-honored techniques that reflect the craftsmanship, heritage and culture of this beautiful spirit,” said Rachel Kiley. “This tequila has been in our minds for years – and in the hearts of our co-founder’s family for generations. Needless to say, we are so excited for tequila drinkers to finally experience what has been decades of magic in the making, and to add this to their collection to sip, savor and share.”
THE TEQUILERO & THE AGAVERO :
With a creative mind, a knack for chemistry and a passion for alcohol production of all kinds, Peter started his career making wine in California, and later fell into craft brewing at Monday Night Brewing, where he has created a plethora of national and international award-winning beers as Brewmaster for more than a decade. After starting to dabble in craft spirits, Peter happened to meet Omar Martinez, who was actively working to bring his family’s agave farm back to life. Between Peter’s experience in distilling and alcohol production and Omar’s access to tequila’s main ingredient, Pedro Furtivo was born – as well as Peter and Omar’s respective roles as Tequilero and Agavero.
“Omar and I come from two completely different places and cultures, but shared an almost identical dream,” said Peter. “Fate brough us together and has allowed us to take our network of resources to create something special and authentic. As the producer in this relationship, I am thrilled to provide drinkers with a grade-A example of what additive-free tequila can – and is meant to – taste like.”
“I am so fortunate to have this opportunity to revive my family’s land and feel proud to be able to bring the shared dreams of my me, my dad and my brother to life through this tequila,” Martinez continued. “Family is at the center of Pedro Furtivo – the constant reminder that great things can happen when we work together. I think we can all ‘cheers’ to that.”
THE TEQUILA:
· Pedro Furtivo Blanco begins with over-ripe pinas that are slowly cooked and patiently rested. Open-air fermented with house yeast, the tequila is double distilled at low temperatures for purity, and then proofed with water from the heart of Jalisco.
o Aroma: Bright agave with notes of olive, pepper, minerality and fresh herbs.
o Taste: Richly complex cooked agave with notes of fresh cut grass and a touch of earthiness
o Body & Color: Natural, crystal-clear color, delightfully explosive to sip
o Finish: Full viscous mouthfeel with a long, beautiful finish
· Pedro Furtivo Reposado rests for six months in a mix of American oak bourbon barrels and French oak red barrels. The two are then blended to create a golden-hued tequila with notes of cooked agave, vanilla, citrus and caramel.
o Aroma: Rich oak with vanilla, baking spices and sweet agave
o Taste: Sweet cooked agave throughout, in harmony with cinnamon, vanilla and citrus
o Body & Color: Rested for six months in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-red wine Bordeaux barrels, developing a slight translucent amber color
o Finish Full viscous mouthfeel with a rich, beautiful finish
THE POP-UP TRUCK:
Starting August 23, Atlanta locals and visitors will have the opportunity to experience Pedro Furtivo Tequila at a pop-up tequila truck that will be located in the courtyard of Monday Night Brewing Garage at Lee + White.
