FORT WORTH – La Pulga Spirits, founded by three local Fort Worth entrepreneurs, has added La Pulga Sotol Silver to its growing portfolio of super-premium Mexican spirits, including La Pulga Tequilas (Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo), and La Pulga Mezcal.
Now available across North Texas, La Pulga Sotol is crafted in Mexico from 100% wild-harvested Dasylirion, a succulent which grows in the high deserts of the Northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. The plants for La Pulga Sotol are sustainably harvested to preserve the unique ecosystem of the region, and the spirit is produced without the use of any additives.
“Sotol is an incredible spirit, with a history that dates back more than 800 years in Mexico,” says Andrew De La Torre, one of the founders of Fort Worth-based La Pulga Spirits. “My family is from Coahuila, which borders Chihuahua, and so I know firsthand how sotol has always been a significant part of Northern Mexico’s deep cultural heritage. For La Pulga Sotol, it was important to me to find a true Mexican sotol that honors and showcases this traditional spirit, while also helping to educate people about the enormous variety and quality of Mexican spirits. La Pulga Sotol is a product my grandparents would be proud of.”
La Pulga Sotol’s rich and vibrant flavor profile is characterized by its notes of earthy, herbal tones, blended with hints of citrus and a touch of smoky sweetness. It has a long and clean, slightly sweet, finish.
The brand takes its name from the “Pulga” outdoor market on University Drive on the Northside of Fort Worth, one of the oldest open-air flea markets in the U.S. The brand was founded by De La Torre, a club owner and the operator of the Pulga market, together with Sarah Castillo, a well-known and respected Fort Worth restauranteur (Taco Heads, Tinies Mexican Cuisine, Sidesaddle Saloon), and Stephen Slaughter, a local entrepreneur.
La Pulga Sotol joins La Pulga Mezcal to mark the second release in the brand’s new “Wild Spirits” series. All La Pulga bottles are adorned with an “alebrije” (Mexican folk-art images of mystical animals), corresponding to the specific spirit in the bottle. The animal spirit on La Pulga Sotol bottles is a scorpion, symbolizing the Chihuahuan desert.
La Pulga Tequilas, Mezcal and Sotol are available through Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC) at bars and restaurants throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and other select Texas markets, and at fine spirits retailers. The brand is also available for purchase online via the La Pulga website. The suggested retail price of La Pulga Sotol (76 proof) is $44.99/750ml. Each La Pulga varietal is packaged in an eye-catching and easy-to-pour bottle, sealed with a premium cork stopper and adorned with a keepsake La Pulga medallion.
