On the occasion of Sicilia en Primeur 2025, the leading event for Sicilian wine that each year welcomes press and opinion leaders from around the world, the Sicilia DOC Wines Consortium reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and promoting the Denomination.
During the talk "Protection and Promotion of PDO and PGI Products and the Role of the New State Seals", presented alongside the Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute and the Central Inspectorate for Quality Protection and Fraud Repression of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Consortium highlighted the importance of the new State seal for denomination wines. This innovative system integrates the Italian tricolor flag and a QR code, providing consumers with practical tools to recognize and appreciate the authenticity of Italian wines worldwide.
"The Consortium has been committed to protection and promotion activities since its inception," said Antonio Rallo, President of the Sicilia DOC Wines Consortium. "Since 2018, we have wholeheartedly embraced the path that, in 2022, led us to be among the first Italian DOCs to introduce the State seal on our bottles voluntarily: in 2024, approximately 82 million bottles of Sicilia DOC wine were produced. Adopting the new seal, featuring a QR code and the Italian tricolor flag, further enhances our wine heritage, providing consumers with practical tools to recognize and appreciate the authenticity of Sicilia DOC wines."
This innovative seal, developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, marks a significant step forward in protecting Italian Designations of Origin, ensuring the authenticity and provenance of products closely tied to their territory, such as wine.
Considered the digital passport for the quality of Italian wine production, the seal represents a key solution against counterfeiting, enabling the secure identification of certified products through a physical element. Equipped with advanced technologies similar to those used in banknotes, the seal undergoes strict controls: ICQRF inspectors verify its authenticity in the field using UV lamps provided by the State Mint and Polygraphic Institute, thus strengthening the synergy between technological innovation and public oversight. This combination ensures transparency throughout the entire supply chain and safeguards consumers.
In addition to its security features, the seal includes a QR code that provides immediate access to the digital platform of the State Mint and Polygraphic Institute, where detailed data on the traceability and origin of the wine is available. This not only strengthens the connection between producers, certification bodies, Protection Consortia, and wineries, but also enriches it. The digital tool also serves as a powerful means of strategic and highly impactful territorial marketing.
Highlighting the excellence of Made in Italy, the seal features the Italian tricolor flag, making it easier to identify Italian wine in international markets and enhancing its global prestige.
"With this initiative, the Sicilia DOC Wines Protection Consortium aims not only to promote the quality and transparency of production but also to highlight its strong connection to the territory," said Camillo Pugliesi, Director of the Consortium. "With a simple gesture, consumers can discover the origin and unique characteristics of Sicilian wines, strengthening a relationship of trust with a product that symbolizes Italian excellence."
The adoption of the State seal represents a key element in the strategy to enhance Sicilia DOC wines.
"Thanks to this authentication system, international consumers will have the certainty of purchasing a genuine wine, closely tied to its land of origin and distinguished by unique qualities that set it apart on the global market. The goal is to build a distinctive identity and a strong reputation for Sicilia DOC wines, establishing a powerful territorial brand to support long-term sustainable growth," Camillo Pugliesi concluded.

The QR code also provides immediate access to the digital platform managed by the State Mint and Polygraphic Institute, where information on the product’s traceability and authenticity and details about the territory are available. This system engages all actors in the supply chain—certification bodies, Protection Consortia, and companies—equipping them with a novel, strategic, and highly impactful tool for territorial marketing.
The tricolor adorns “Made in Italy” wine: the presence of the Italian flag on the seal will facilitate the identification of national products, especially in foreign markets, ensuring authenticity and strengthening the image of Italian wine on the international stage. The Consortium’s commitment will continue in this direction, closely monitoring the development of this innovative and essential tool for territorial promotion.
The use of the State seal is a key element of the Consortium’s promotional strategy to establish a distinctive identity and a positive reputation for Sicilia DOC wines, helping to create a strong territorial brand for long-term positioning in international markets.
