New limited-edition whisky comes to life through a collaboration with musicians Terrace Martin and Jazztronik
NEW YORK, NY (September 18, 2025) — Suntory Whisky Toki is proud to unveil Toki Black, its first limited-edition whisky—a vivid expression that embodies the spirit of reinvention, blending tradition and innovation, capturing the essence of old-meets-new Japan. Crafted with Hakushu Peated malt and Hakushu Grain, Toki Black explores a deeper, richer side to Japan’s beautiful nature, with a softly smoky profile. The launch comes to life through a music and film collaboration with Grammy-nominated American producer Terrace Martin and Japanese jazz artist Ryota Nozaki, known as Jazztronik.
“As our first release in a decade, Toki Black marks a significant milestone for both Toki and The House of Suntory,” said Masaki Morimoto, president of The House of Suntory. “The name ‘Toki,’ meaning ‘time,’ represents a deep part of Japanese culture—where reverence for tradition meets bold innovation. This limited-edition launch reflects that philosophy, offering a contemporary expression that honors our heritage while engaging a new generation of whisky enthusiasts.”
Originally created to welcome newcomers to Japanese whisky, Suntory Whisky Toki has always provided an approachable yet refined experience. Toki Black evolves that ethos, adding a gentle smokiness and further complexity. Designed for both special occasions and everyday indulgence, its profile opens with layered aromas of baked apple, oregano and honeysuckle; transitions into a butterscotch sweetness balanced by clove, cinnamon and toasted rosemary; and finishes with notes of white pepper, ginger and a gentle, lingering smokiness. It is best enjoyed neat or in a classic whisky cocktail such as a Toki Ginger Sour.
The film and bespoke vinyl release curated in collaboration with Terrace Martin and Jazztronik are inspired by Jazz Kissa culture and the Japanese philosophy of Ichigo Ichie—the idea that each moment is unique and unrepeatable. Just as the whisky blends old and new, so does the record: Side A features a raw, improvisational session between the artists, while Side B presents Martin’s modern reinterpretation—bridging tradition and innovation through sound.
"This project was more than just making music—it was about capturing a moment that can’t be repeated," said Martin. "When I learned about the inspiration behind Toki Black, it immediately resonated. Ryota and I set out to blend spontaneity with intention, tradition with experimentation, and create a record that lives in the spirit of now—just like the whisky that inspired it."
Toki Black (86 proof) is now available for a limited time only at select retailers for a suggested retail price of $39.99 per 750mL bottle; prices are subject to market adaptation.
A testament to The House of Suntory’s commitment to transparency, quality, and reinforcing Japan’s leadership on the global whisky stage, Toki Black adheres to the Japanese whiskey labeling standards of the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA)—an organization dedicated to upholding the integrity of the Japanese Whisky category.
