Known best for its namesake root beer, Filbert’s also produces 17 flavors of soda. The company started at the turn of the century when George Filbert and family delivered milk, ice and coal to homes in the Bridgeport neighborhood by horse-drawn wagon. The family added root beer when it became popular during Prohibition. It was manufactured in half barrels and supplied mostly to taverns across five nearby states. Still a family business, Filbert’s is run by Ronald Filbert and his wife Karen at 3430 S. Ashland Ave.

BevNET Review: Filbert's Old Time Root Beer is a "draft style" root beer produced by Filbert's of Chicago. The brew is decent and offers a uniquely styled body that's not as sweet as many of the root beers on the market today. However, the other side of this is that the product does not have the same level of creaminess either. Basically, it's a decent brew that offers a good alternative to some of the heavier root beers that are commonplace in the category today. A slightly stronger body and cane sugar might help liven this product up a bit -- otherwise it's just an average quality root beer.Reviewed on: 4/22/2004
