When Coco Café first appeared on store shelves last September, it would’ve been easy to assume that the coconut water/latte blend already had some sort of relationship with Vita Coco; the name, design, and packaging of both brands were – for certain – quite similar. Coco Café founders Brian McCaslin and Elan Eifer admittedly admired Vita Coco and its branding, though, at the time, the two companies had no affiliation, a fact that quickly changed following a chance meeting at BevNET Live.
Hot on the heels of the announcement that Zico has gone into the coconut latte business that Coco Café pioneered, the new Vita Coco property has found a home for its products in Fresh Market, a 100-plus store specialty/natural retail chain that is gradually becoming an important launch point for new beverages.

When Mike Kirban told attendees at BevNET Live in December that the biggest low the company experienced in 2011 was getting slapped with the company’s first class-action lawsuit, he hadn’t yet had to deal with the pain that comes from writing the check that makes it go away. Yesterday, he did.
Talk about a whirlwind courtship. It took just four months from organic espresso /coconut water blend Coco Café to go from independent, entrepreneurial beverage company to a strategic piece in the coconut water chess game. The company, which had its first production run in September, had bids from two different potential investors by the end of December and moved into Vita Coco’s offices by the end of January.
After getting rave reviews at the December BevNET Live event — taking home the award during the New Product Showdown — Coco Café had to imagine that it would be getting a lot of attention and some new accounts. But apparently things have really accelerated for the Los Angeles-based espresso/coconut water blend, as Vita Coco, the country’s best selling coconut water brand has swooped in to make an investment in Coco Café.
Some pretty provocative stuff out there in the news today — and we’re not talking politics. In the New York Times, there’s an interesting take on the war on sugary drinks. The Times reports on a new study that found state laws that ban soda – but not other sweetened beverages – to be ineffective in reducing the amount of sugary drinks middle school students buy and consume at school.
