Non-alcoholic beverage sales accelerated during the two-week period ending June 1, with volume sales picking up as pricing eases, according to an analysis of NielsenIQ data by Goldman Sachs Equity Research.
- Total retail dollar sales grew 2% in the two-week period, which includes the Memorial Day holiday weekend, compared to +1.5% growth in the four-week period and +2.3% in the 12-week period,
- Volume sales grew by 1% in the two-week period, up from flat growth in the four-week period and +0.3% for the 12-week period.
- As inflation continues to cool, pricing growth was soft at just +1% in the two-week period, versus +1.4% for the four-week period and +2% for the 12-week period.
CSDs
Carbonated soft drink dollar sales were up +4.6% in the two-week period, compared to +4.4% in the four-weeks. Volume sales rose +0.9%, up from flat volumes in the four-weeks, while average pricing increased by 3.6%, decelerating from +4.4% in the four-weeks.
Dollar sales for The Coca-Cola Company were consistent at +4.3% in the two- and four-week periods, while volume was largely in line with the category at +0.9% in the two-weeks and +0.1% in the four-weeks. Pricing decelerated to +3.3% in the two-weeks, down from +4.2% in the four-weeks.
PepsiCo saw sales rise by +0.8% in the two-weeks, compared with +0.7% in the four-weeks. Volume sales fell -1.7% in the two-weeks, improving from a -2.1% drop in the four-weeks. Average pricing was up by +2.5% in the two-weeks and +2.8% in the four-weeks. Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) reported dollar sales up +4.5% (+4.7% for four-weeks) with volume sales up +2.1% (+1.4% for four-weeks) and pricing up 2.4% (+3.3% for four-weeks).
Among better-for-you brands, Poppi reported dollar sales up +176.7% with volumes growing 184.4% and average pricing down by -2.7%. Stevia-sweetened brand Zevia saw dollar sales slide -1.7% in the period, with volumes sliding -17% and average pricing up by +18.4%.
Energy Drinks
Energy sales declined -0.3% in the two-week period, down from +0.1% in the four-weeks. Volume sales of energy fell -0.9% (-0.3% for four-weeks) while average pricing increased just +0.6% (+0.4% for four-weeks).
Category leader Monster, excluding Bang, faced a -3.3% dollar sale decline, with volume dropping in tandem -3.2% and average pricing down by -0.1%. Red Bull likewise faced a slide, with sales down -0.1% and volume declining -4.4%. Average pricing was up by +4.5%.
Celsius reported dollar sales up 31.9% while volume growth remained strong at +40.1% and pricing fell -5.8%. Its exclusive distribution partner PepsiCo (Rockstar and MTN Dew) saw sales slide by -22.8% and volume fell -23.1%, with just +0.4% pricing growth. Sales of 5-Hour Energy fell -9.1% and volume was down -10.1% with pricing up by +1.1%.
Nutrabolt/C4 (+20.3%), Alani Nu (+58.3%), and Ghost (+5.5%) all reported positive dollar sales gains, while PRIME (-65.1%) and A Shoc (-85.2%) faced sharp declines.
Bottled Water
Water sales grew 0.5% in the two-weeks, gaining over a -0.6% decline in the four-week period. Volume sales improved +1.6% (+0.6% for four-weeks) while average pricing declined by -1.1% (-1.2% for four-weeks).
Private label products, which lead the category, grew +3.4% in the two-weeks, against +3.2% volume and +0.2% average pricing. BlueTriton Brands was up by +2.4% in the period with +6.2% volume and a -3.6% price decrease.
Both Coke and Pepsi reported -4.2% declines in dollar sales, while Fiji (-1.6%), Nestle Holdings (-5%), CG Roxane (-0.5%), KDP (-9.6%), Hint (-2.8%), and Liquid Death (-6.1%) were all down as well. Danone (+9.7%) and Niagara Bottling (+1.8%) both gained in the two-week period.
Sports Drinks
Hydration beverages fell -0.7% in the two-week period, an improvement from -3.3% declines in the four-weeks. Volume sales were down -2.8% (-5.3% for four-weeks) while average pricing grew +2.2% (+2.1% for four-weeks).
Gatorade (PepsiCo) fell -1% in the two-week period (-3.6% for four-weeks) while volume dropped -5% (-7.3% for four-weeks) and average pricing improved +4.2% (+4% for four-weeks). Coke’s portfolio of BodyArmor and Powerade was up by 0.6% (-1.7% for four-weeks) with +1.5% volume (-1.4%) and average pricing down -0.8% (-0.3%).
PRIME dropped by -27.9% with volume down -19.2% and average pricing down -10.7%. Electrolit was up +36.7% against +32.8% volume and +2.9% pricing.
Sparkling Water
Sparkling water sales grew +6.8% in the two-week period (+6.3% for four-weeks) with volume up by +2.2% (versus +1.8%) and pricing up +4.5% (versus +4.4%).
Talking Rain grew sales by +5.1% while LaCroix-maker National Beverage Corp declined -7.2%. Nestle Holdings (+1.8%), Polar (+1.1%), Coke (+23.1%), PepsiCo (+5.9%), Spindrift (+14.2%), Waterloo (+28.2%) and Liquid Death (+18.1%) all posted dollar sales improvements.
RTD Coffee
Ready-to-drink coffee products were down -6.2% in the two-week period, about in line with a -6.4% decline in the four-week period. Volumes fell -3.4% (versus -4.1%) and average pricing was down by -3% (versus -2.4%).
Starbucks sales fell -10% in the two-weeks (-10.1% in four-weeks), with volume declines in line around -10.3% (-11.5% for four-weeks) and average pricing up just +0.3% (+1.6% for four-weeks).
Danone’s STOK improved sales by +11.8% while Califia Farms was up +7.9%. Black Rifle Coffee Company (-7.8%), Coke (-14.7%) and Kitu Life’s Super Coffee (-35.5%) all fell.
Coconut Water
Although smallest in dollar value, coconut water had the highest growth of the tracked categories with dollar sales up +17.9% (+15.2% for four-weeks) and volume up +18.6% (+16.4% for four-weeks). Average pricing declined by -0.5% (-1.1% for four-weeks).
Category leader Vita Coco was up +16.9% in the two-weeks, while refrigerated brand Harmless Harvest (+8.3%), Goya (+18.5%), C2O (+14.1%), Sun Hing Foods (+23.4%) and Brooklyn Bottling Group (+42.5%) also all grew sales.
