Citrus Cayenne

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Using a blend of capsaicin and cayenne pepper, Prometheus Springs’ Citrus Cayenne has a complex, but enjoyable level of spice that’s backed by the refreshing flavor of fruit juice. In this case, the product contains pear, lemon, and grapefruit juices, each of which can be distinguished from the mix, although the grapefruit is the most potent of the bunch. The cayenne gives the product a smoky note, while added sea salt makes the flavor have some extra pop to it. The packaging is a 16 oz. glass bottle with a stock cap. The biggest change over the original Prometheus line is the addition of a white background, which definitely improves readability of the product. The pastel accent colors help give the product a soothing look, which should, at least subconsciously, let consumers know that this product is not going to be too spicy to drink. Overall, this is a very well executed addition to the lineup.Reviewed on: 4/29/2011

Spicy Pear

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 10oz Glass
BevNET Review: With capsaicin providing the only spice in the drink, Prometheus Springs’ Spicy Pear is probably as close to “entry level” spice as you’ll find in the lineup. The first thing that we noticed about this flavor was the strong aroma of pear flavoring, which hits the nose a little too hard. Flavor is also heavy on the pear, which, at 25 percent juice, is no surprise. Fortunately, the flavoring doesn’t stand out the way that it does with the aroma and the pear flavor tastes natural and accurate. The capsaicin spice is straightforward, meaning that it lacks the pepper flavor found in some of the other varieties. Packaging is clean and appealing, with the accent color choice making the lettering easy to read. We also like that the color of the liquid seems to go with the flavor – that’s something that we can’t say about all of the Prometheus Springs varieties. Overall, another solid flavor that’s a great starting point for people who are new to the concept of spicy beverages. Reviewed on: 4/29/2011

Mango Chili

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 10oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the three new flavors that we sampled (Citrus Cayenne, Spicy Pear, and Mango Chili), this one is smack in the middle in terms of spiciness and sweetness. The flavor starts out with the very pleasant and tropical flavor of mango, which is then followed by a full bodied note of chili pepper. The two flavors complement each other well, with just the right amount of sweet and heat. Packaging is consistent with the other two, with an orange accent color that, along with the new white backdrop, helps make for a visually appealing package. Overall, Mango Chili is a very enjoyable entry to the line. Reviewed on: 4/29/2011

Pomegranate Black Pepper

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16 oz Glass
BevNET Review: The final flavor of Prometheus Springs that we sampled was Pomegranate Black Pepper. Like the other flavors in the line, this flavor’s key attribute is its use of capsaicin extract for health benefits and to create a spicy flavor. Inside the bottle, there isn’t much in the way of pomegranate flavor, which wasn’t a total surprise based on the yellowish color of the liquid. The result of this is a flavor that’s not that much different than the Lemon Ginger variety, with the most noticeable difference being a pepper flavor in place of ginger. We think that some further differentiation would be a good thing, especially if they could dial up the pomegranate flavor (maybe by using some juice). This would likely make a very marketable product, with the familiar flavor (and color) of pomegranate juice making for a nice point of introduction to the brand. Overall, we like the concept of having a pomegranate flavor, but the execution could be improved upon.Reviewed on: 4/27/2010

Lemon Ginger

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 10oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the three capsaicin-enhanced flavors that make up the Prometheus Springs line, Lemon Ginger is certainly the most mainstream and, therefore, likely to be the most marketable entry. The base flavor is something that would typically be called lemonade, with lemon and evaporated cane juice (5 percent juice) giving the product a very natural lemon flavor. From there, added ginger flavor, salt, and capsaicin extract give the drink its spice. In terms of just how much heat is in this product, it’s on par with a spicy ginger beer, with the heat lingering around for a while after you are done drinking it. However, the citrus definitely helps balance things, making for a drink that’s definitely enjoyable to consume, whether you are drinking this for flavor or functional purposes. The packaging is well executed, with a clear label wrapping around a 16 oz. glass bottle. We like the sophisticated look of the branding, which seems like a good fit for what’s inside the bottle. However, the brand’s look doesn’t jump out at you as something that’s going to have a lot of heat to it. We’re not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, especially since they’ve managed to make something that feels premium and classy, which might be hard to do if they had included graphics that communicate heat (e.g. hot peppers). Overall, a very well executed and enjoyable product, assuming you don’t mind a little heat in your beverage. Reviewed on: 4/27/2010

Lychee Wasabi

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 10oz glass
BevNET Review: Prometheus Spring’s Lychee Wasabi is definitely the most original tasting flavor of their new line of capsaicin-enhanced beverages. Starting with a base of lemon and evaporated cane juice, they’ve added capsaicin extract (the heat in your hot peppers), salt, and lychee wasabi flavor, which makes for something that’s unlike any beverage we’ve had in recent memory. The lychee flavor is accurate, as is the wasabi, while the added capsaicin gives the drink some serious heat (if you’re like us, it will linger a while and give you a nice warming sensation). Despite the heat, the drink has an almost addictive quality to it, which is the result of its yin and yang flavors. From a visual perspective, the product’s packaging is appealing to the eye and whets the appetite, but there seems to be a disconnect with what’s inside the bottle. Specifically, it’s not overly obvious that this drink is going to pack the heat that it does, which will no doubt surprise some consumers when they try the product. Incorporating the word “spice” or capsaicin in a more prominent way would certainly help. Overall, it’s an innovative concept, but one that’s likely not as marketable as their Lemon Ginger variety.
