Superfrau Launches New Flavor For Earth Month: Hibiscus Orange

Launching into the New England region of Whole Foods Market just last year with its line of deliciously refreshing and sustainably-sourced beverages, Superfrau now introduces its “best flavor yet”: Hibiscus Orange, just in time for Earth Month.

Superfrau, which means “super woman,” was designed to empower consumers to fight food waste and climate change by offering healthy and sustainable products for everyday enjoyment. Its first line of products can be described as a uniquely refreshing vitamin- and-nutrient-rich soda alternative that’s slightly sweet and slightly tart, without any added sugar or sweeteners. Made with fresh “upcycled” whey generated during Greek yogurt manufacturing that would otherwise be lost in the supply chain, Superfrau is naturally loaded with B vitamins for energy, electrolytes for sustained hydration, and gut-beneficial acids.

After successfully launching its first three flavors– Cucumber Lime, Peach Mango, and Pineapple Ginger– into select Whole Foods Market stores in early 2022– Superfrau has since grown significantly, expanding into Big Y markets and other specialty grocers throughout New England like Guido’s, River Valley Coop, Cambridge Naturals, Dave’s Fresh Marketplace as well as online on GoPuff, Urban Outfitters, and Misfits Market. In August, they released their summer flavor– Blueberry Lemonade with a TikTok that went viral.

Now with its newest flavor, Hibiscus Orange, which has been exclusively available at Whole Foods Market throughout New England since January, Superfrau offers another refreshing option to its e-commerce platform to celebrate Earth Month. Gaining a small cult following, Superfrau has become the “new go-to fizzy drink” for Gen Z. The timely release follows the announcement that Superfrau was selected as a Good Food Award Winner based on both taste and the company’s social and environmental practices.

Melissa Martinelli, founder and CEO of Superfrau, noted that “Food waste is one of the biggest contributors to climate change, so we’re excited to introduce a product that’s beloved in other parts of the world for its nutritional profile and delicious taste, while also providing an opportunity to be more thoughtful about our impact on the planet. In a fun way, of course. Superfrau isn’t just another can in the refrigerator case. We are proud leaders and innovators in the upcycled food category, and our delicious sparkling functional beverage is connecting with consumers in a genuine and relatable way.”

What exactly is “upcycled whey?” Superfrau partners with Greek yogurt manufacturers to capture their surplus liquid whey (in most cases, two-thirds of the milk that goes into Greek yogurt making ends up as liquid whey, but is often tossed or fed to livestock), and repurposes, or “upcycles” it into nutrient-dense products for us to enjoy. As an Upcycled Certified product, Superfrau undergoes a third party review to ensure a transparent supply chain that creates valuable products out of nutritious ingredients that would otherwise go to waste in current manufacturing processes.
