Ono is the latest brand to jump into the red-hot protein soda category. Available in White Peach and Yuzu & Lime, each 12-ounce can contains 12 grams of whey protein isolate, zero grams of sugar, and 50 calories. With enjoyable flavors and a meaningful amount of protein, this is a promising first effort, although the packaging could do a better job of communicating what’s inside.
Things that stand out:
- Both flavors are pleasant and approachable, with a mild tang from the whey protein. The stevia and monk fruit sweetener blend delivers sweetness without much lingering aftertaste.
- The 12 grams of protein gives Ono a more substantial functional offering than competing products with single-digit protein content, while maintaining zero sugar and low calories (50 per serving).
- The yellow and peach color schemes and flowing illustrated backgrounds give the cans a distinctive shelf presence. There’s a good visual foundation to build from here as the brand develops.
Things to consider:
- The illustrated backgrounds compete with the white Ono logo and protein callout, reducing readability. This is especially noticeable on Yuzu & Lime, where the white lettering feels washed out against the yellow.
- The flavor names and “protein soda” wording need greater prominence. Moving these elements front and center would help consumers identify both the variety and the product’s positioning more quickly.
- A clear front-panel callout for zero sugar or 50 calories would strengthen the message. With an enjoyable liquid already in place, sharper packaging and additional flavors would be welcome next steps.
