Stumptown’s Cold Brew Coffee infused with nitrogen is a well-executed and innovative coffee beverage. At the base of the product is a smooth but full-bodied cold-brew coffee that’s extremely drinkable. The nitrogen adds a slightly creamy texture to it and, despite being a sweetener-free product, it has a pretty complex flavor that we think even consumers who don’t typically drink black coffee will enjoy. And as far as the cold brew category is concerned, adding nitrogen, which has been done by a variety of coffee retailers (including Stumptown) for on-premise sales, is a twist that really sets this product apart from the other packaged products in the category. Packaging, which is an 11 oz. can, has a look that’s reminiscent of the craft beer category. There’s a somewhat old school/hipster look to it, which is a nice extension of the retail branding that the company has been developing at its cafes over the past couple of years. From a functional perspective, an 11 oz. can makes for a unique consumption experience. The can opens with a sensation that we’d compare to deflating a ball, which is much unlike opening a carbonated product where the product might foam over. And to the earlier point about this product’s design, it definitely looks as though you are consuming a beer if you’re drinking it straight from the can. We’re not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but it’s definitely something that is unique about this product over its other offerings. Overall, this product is, at least as far as dairy- and sweetener-free offerings are concerned, the new king of ready-to-drink cold brew coffee.
