Non-alcoholic beverage sales picked up in the two-week period ending July 15, according to an analysis of NielsenIQ data by Goldman Sachs Equity Research.
Retail dollar sales grew 10.1% year-over-year for the two-weeks, compared to 8.2% in the four-week period and 8.5% for the 12-weeks, according to the report. The growth was supported by an improvement in volume declines, as volume increased by 0.5% in the two-weeks (-2.1% for the four-weeks) while average pricing increases decelerated, up 9.6% in the period compared to 10.4% for the four-weeks.
CSDs
Carbonated soft drink sales were up 12.4% in the two-week period, versus 11.1% in the four-weeks, as volume sales fell -0.7% (improving from -2.2% in the four-weeks) and average price jumped 13.1%.
The Coca-Cola Company reported sales up 13.2%, as +14.2% pricing offset a -0.9% volume decline. Sales for PepsiCo grew by 8.9% as volume dipped -0.7% and pricing rose 9.7%. Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) saw sales increase by 12.4%, with volume dropping -2.9% and pricing up 15.8%.
Energy Drinks
Sales of energy drinks remained elevated and roughly consistent, growing 14.2% in the two-week period compared to 14.1% in the four-weeks and 14.3% in the 12-weeks. Volume sales in the two-week period were up 4.3% and average pricing grew by 9.5%.
Category leader Monster reported sales up 12.9%, with volume growing by 3% and average pricing up 9.6%. Red Bull followed with sales growing 9.9%, and volumes of +2.5% with +7.1% average pricing.
As it settles into its spot as the number three brand in the category, Celsius continues to rise triple-digits, with sales up 165.4% and volume rising 148.8% in the two-weeks. The brand’s distributor, PepsiCo (Rockstar and MTN Dew) reported dollar sales of +7.5% with a volume drop of -9.2%.
Awaiting final sale to Monster, where Coke’s red trucks could possibly be waiting for it, the bleeding at Bang hasn’t ceased as sales fell -65.4% in the period, down to $685.3 million, with volume sliding -68.3%.
Elsewhere in the category, Starbucks fell -10.8% while Nutrabolt/C4 (+65.2%), Alani Nu (+27.2%), Ghost (+122.9%), and Up Time Sports (+1.4%) saw sales improve. A Shoc (-32.8%) and ZOA (-44.3%) faced declines.
Bottled Water
Water sales improved by 7.7% in the two-weeks, accelerating from +4.6% in the four-weeks, with volume sales up 2.5% and pricing up 5%. Blue Triton Brands (+8%), Coke (+6.8%), PepsiCo (+3.7%), CG Roxane (+4.7%), KDP (+3.6%) and Danone North America (+19%) all posted positive dollar sales growth while Fiji (-1.7%) and Niagara Bottling (-0.9%) were down.
Sports Drinks
Sports drinks hustled in the two-week period, up 8.1% compared to 4.5% in the four-weeks. Volume sales fell -4.5% (improving from -8.3% in the four-weeks) while average pricing improved by 13.2%.
Pepsi’s Gatorade showed 4.5% growth against -6.9% volume and +12.2% pricing, while Coke (-5.8%) and its BodyArmor brand (-7.7%) reported sales down, with volume dipping -11.4% and -10% respectively. Electrolit has maintained its strong growth performance, up 28.1%, with +18.9% volume and +7.7% average pricing. The data set has not yet included sales for fast-rising sports drink brand PRIME.
RTD Tea
Tea sales accelerated, growing 5.3% in the period versus 2.8% in the four-week period. An average price increase of +10% offset volume declines of -4.3%.
Lipton reported sales up 0.4% in the two-weeks (versus -2.3% in the four-weeks) while Coke (+7.5%), AriZona (+7.8%), Milo’s (+19.2%) and Guayaki (+28.3%) reported strong growth. KDP (-6.1%), Peak Rock Capital (-6.8%) and Red Diamond (-11.1%) reported declines.
Sparkling Flavored Water
Sparkling water rose 3.9% in the two-week period, versus 1.5% for the four-weeks, with volumes down-2.6% and pricing up 6.7%. Talking Rain (-3.5%) and National Beverage Corp/LaCroix (-4.5%) fell in the two-weeks while Bubly (+13.9%), Polar (+22%), Spindrift (+18.1%) and Waterloo (+50.3%) were up.
RTD Coffee
Coffee sales improved +3.2% (+2.3% for the four-weeks) while volume was down -3.2% and pricing climbed +6.6%.
Starbucks grew sales by 5.9%, while Danone’s STOK (+13.7%), Black Rifle (+28.5%) and Molson Coors Beverage Company (+11%) improved as well. Meanwhile, Coke’s coffee portfolio sales fell -23.7%.
Still Flavored Water
Still flavored water rose 9% in the two-weeks, up from 5.6% growth for the four-week period, as +13.3% average pricing offset -3.8% volume declines. Coke (+8.3%), PepsiCo (+26%) and good2grow (+8.7%) were up during the two-weeks while Hint (-3.8%), Blue Triton (-34.4%) and Kraft Heinz (-12.6%) continued to face declines.
