Hammondsport, NY: Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is proud to announce that its 2023 Grüner Veltliner has been ranked #5 by Wine Enthusiast on the "Top 100 Best Buys of 2025," placing it among the very best affordable wines from around the world. This influential annual list highlights the top wines priced at $20 and under, celebrating bottles that deliver both outstanding quality and remarkable value across all regions and styles.
Awarded 92 points and a Best Buy designation by Wine Enthusiast, the 2023 Grüner Veltliner has quickly become one of the Finger Lakes' standout white wines. Reviewer Christina Pickard described it as "A riot of summer flowers, lemon drop and marmalade aromas burst from the glass. It's dry, fresh and fruity, perfect for pairing with spicy Southeast Asian fare, or sipping well chilled on its own."
Grüner Veltliner, Austria's flagship white grape, has found a thriving home at Dr. Konstantin Frank. Third-generation president Fred Frank first planted the variety in 2007, inspired by his studies in Germany and time spent in Vienna, where he admired Grüner's remarkable food-pairing versatility. Today, the winery maintains one of the most extensive plantings of the grape in the U.S., located on its Seneca Estate in Hector, NY. Benefiting from the area's unique "Banana Belt" microclimate, the 2023 vintage exhibits remarkable character, with aromas of guava, rosewater, and lime, balanced by apricot and papaya.
The Wine Enthusiast accolade adds to a string of critical recognition for the 2023 vintage. Decanter named it one of its "New York State 2023: Value Picks," awarding 92 points and praising its "herbal and floral aromatics" and "mineral-driven balance." James Suckling also awarded 92 points, with reviewer Stuart Pigott noting its "pepper, smoke and greengage plum aromas," "firm backbone," and "long, very clean finish." In The Wall Street Journal, columnist Lettie Teague spotlighted the "delightfully fruity" 2023 Grüner as her New York pick in a column devoted to the grape's food-friendly appeal. Additional publications have also recognized the wine since its release, further cementing its place among the Finger Lakes' most celebrated whites and establishing it as one of the leading Grüner Veltliners produced in America.
"From the beginning, I believed Grüner Veltliner had the potential to thrive in the Finger Lakes," says Fred Frank, third-generation president. "To see our 2023 vintage ranked among the top five Best Buys in the world is very gratifying. It validates years of work in the vineyard and cellar, and confirms what I felt back in my student days in Germany, that Grüner could have a very bright future here."
