Clase Azul México, the Mexican luxury house known for its exquisite spirits and hospitality, has announced the release of Clase Azul Tequila Día de Muertos Edición Limitada Música, the fourth installment in an annual, limited-edition collection called Nuestros Recuerdos (“Our Memories”) which debuted in 2021.

Música, which will consist of 10,000 decanters, celebrates the sounds and rhythms that embody the festive spirit of Día de Muertos (“Day of the Dead”), an iconic Mexican celebration honoring departed loved ones, observed during the first two days of November. Musicians across Mexico enliven this time with their drums, trumpets, guitars and accordions, joyfully remembering those who have passed.

The Nuestros Recuerdos collection began in 2021 with Clase Azul Tequila Día de Muertos Edición Limitada Sabores, followed by Colores in 2022 and Aromas in 2023; dedicated to the flavors, colors and aromas of Día de Muertos, respectively.

As one of Mexico’s most emblematic holidays, Día de Muertos reflects the country’s diverse character through its wide-ranging traditions. As guardians of Mexican culture, Clase Azul México seeks to highlight and share these elements through captivating stories that showcase the magic of an Exquisite Mexico.
For this limited edition’s añejo tequila, Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco conducted a unique 26-month aging process, beginning in American whiskey casks before being split into two batches: one finished in Scotch whisky casks from the Isle of Skye, and the other in casks from the Speyside region. The batches were then recombined to create an exceptional spirit.

“For this edition, I wanted to reinterpret music into sensorial chords to evoke nostalgia, since during Día de Muertos we remember the great moments shared with our loved ones,” comments Tinoco. “Seeking to achieve a harmony of notes with different nuances through the casks, for one part I included smoky notes which are reminders of candles and incense of this festivity and, for the other, sweet notes suggestive of the delicacies placed on ofrendas.”

The tequila born from this unique process features aromas of honey, peat smoke, nutmeg and dried plum; along with flavors of peat smoke, honey and cinnamon with hints of chocolate that linger in a smoky finish. The peat smoke tasting notes come from aging in casks that once held Scotch whisky from the Isle of Skye, where burning peat is traditionally used to dry malted barley for whisky production.

The plum-colored decanter created for this limited edition embodies the soft and calming cadence of Día de Muertos melodies. On the back of the base, Mexican illustrator David Espinosa, known as “el Dee,” has imagined a scene that represents, in golden and lilac hues, an eclectic musical ensemble. Its members, some skeletal in appearance and others wearing allegorical masks, parade to the sound of their trumpets, drums, tambourines and bandolones, reflecting the diverse musical traditions that resonate throughout Mexico on Día de Muertos.

The finishing touch on the decanter is an ornament bathed in 24-karat gold with a fine patina finish, which comes to life in the shape of a jovial, accordion-playing Catrina (a dapper female skeletal figure) whose long limbs move to give the impression that she is playing her instrument and dancing to its tune.
This artisanal piece was designed by the Clase Azul México creative team and handcrafted at the Milagros de Latón artisan workshop in Tesistán, a community in the state of Jalisco. Highly complex, the ornament is composed of almost 40 individual parts cast in 10 separate molds. Each was then assembled and finished by hand, a process which required a week and a half of work.

Clase Azul Tequila Day of the Dead Limited Edition Musica is available in a 1-liter decanter, 40% ABV (80 proof), for 1,500 USD.
